Apple is commemorating over 25 years in India this week by opening its first Apple Store locations in Mumbai and Delhi. The company is also highlighting its environmental initiatives and the significant growth of the Indian developer community. CEO Tim Cook expressed excitement about building on Apple’s history in India, supporting customers, investing in local communities, and innovating for a better future. India’s community of app developers now provides over 1 million jobs, with App Store payouts to developers more than tripling since 2018.
As part of its commitment to becoming 100% carbon neutral for its supply chain and products by 2030, Apple’s Indian manufacturing supply chain partners have pledged to use 100% clean energy. Additionally, Apple announced plans to incorporate 100% recycled cobalt in its batteries by 2025. Since starting iPhone manufacturing in India in 2017, Apple has collaborated with suppliers to assemble iPhone models and produce various components, supporting numerous jobs across the country.
Mobile phone exports in India have seen significant growth, increasing from Rs 45,000 crore to Rs 90,000 crore in the fiscal year 2021-2022, surpassing the previous estimate of Rs 75,000 crore. Mobile phone exports now account for 46% of the overall electronic goods exports, with the Apple ecosystem playing a key role. Apple alone achieved exports worth $5 billion in the fiscal year 2022-2023, with an estimated 50% share of “made in India” iPhones.
